About the Program
Each day in the Summer Writing Program is a day spent with others who are passionate about their art. The rigorous two week program is a laboratory of ideas, where experiments with language lead students to discover new possibilities for their writing.
The workshops in poetry, fiction, and playwriting are supportive environments where young writers take risks and refine their skills. Every day, students have ample time to work individually and to meet with faculty one-on-one. They also participate in collaborative projects with the understanding that a writer grows through a combination of individual and group work.
Located in Natick, Massachusetts, Walnut Hill School is situated in one of the most culturally rich areas in the country. Combining renowned historical institutions with modern day composition, the students and faculty will venture off campus on writing excursions. Samples of locations visited include: Walden Pond in Concord, Harvard Square in Cambridge, Jack Kerouac’s birthplace in Lowell, the Emily Dickinson Homestead in Amherst, the Museum of Fine Arts in downtown Boston, and Robert Frost’s Farm in New Hampshire.
In addition to the co-directors and faculty, there will be master classes and visiting artists throughout the summer session. The program culminates in a public reading of the students’ work on the final day of the session. Invited guests will include the families of the writers, students on campus in other programs and neighbors from surrounding communities.
