Kathy Liu was born and raised in Westchester County, NY.  She graduated from Cornell University in 1992 with an A.B. in Chemistry and in 1993 with an M.A.T.  Prior to moving to the Boston area, she taught in New York State for two years.  Kathy has been teaching Chemistry at Walnut Hill since September 1995 and has been Head of the Science Department since 2004.  In the past, she served on the Board and as President of the Science Teachers’ Area Resource Swap (S.T.A.R.S).  She also hosted two S.T.A.R.S workshops at Walnut Hill.  Over the years, Kathy has attended numerous local and national professional development conferences.  In 2008, Kathy presented a workshop on inquiry-based labs at the National Science Teachers’ Association annual convention held in Boston.  In May 2006, she was inducted into the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society’s Aula Landis Society.  Kathy was awarded the E. E. Ford Faculty Award for Exceptional Merit twice (in 1998 and 2002).  

Kathy enjoys living in Newton, MA with her husband and young daughter.  She is an active member of the Cornell Club of Boston and has been on the Board for numerous years.  Some of Kathy’s favorite things from the past include bringing activities from The Sciencenter (a hands-on science museum in Ithaca, NY) to local summer camps, taking a marine biology course at Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore Island in Maine, and volunteering at a community center in Roxbury, MA.
